Abstract

The works with electronics that Jonathan Harvey completed between 1968 and 1978, together with those that remained ideas or projects, indicate how the foundations of his later work at Ircam and in the Stanford studio were already in place: the concept of electronic sound as an other that is also a self, as a medium of transformation from one instrumental sound to another, and as a voice. His thinking resonated in certain respects with that of Karlheinz Stockhausen, in others with Gérard Grisey’s, but crucial elements he set in place independently.
